We are Laura Purdie Salas and Fiona Bayrock, children's authors with our first trade books coming out in spring 2009. "Bubble" comes from Fiona's book, Bubble Homes and Fish Farts (Charlesbridge), and "Stampede" comes from Laura's book, Stampede!:Poems About the Wild Side of School (Clarion).
Neither of us are sales people--we half-jokingly say that if we had to rely on selling things for a living, we'd end up living under an overpass somewhere! But successful authors must promote and market themselves and their books, so we've set ourselves goals and we're goin' for it.
We've known each other for years and worked together before (even won an award together!) so we've joined forces again on this blog to chat about our marketing journeys to book launch. Actually, having a conversation together is our sneaky way of talking promotion without either of us yabbering on about "me, me, me" to the world, which---shuddershudder---makes us squirm in discomfort.
Aside from the obvious book connections, "bubbles" reminds us of marketing ideas--they come in different sizes and some burst before they reach the surface. And "stampede" gives the feeling of moving forward with vigor--like us and our marketing attempts.
Starting next Monday, we'll post a conversation every week or so about our latest promo efforts. Join us as we share what we've done, feed off each other's energy and ideas, cheer deeds of bravery, share successes, and lament the not-so-successful marketing attempts together. We hope you'll jump into the conversation, too, so leave us a comment or send us an email!
And we should mention Shrinking Violet Promotions, a terrific blog for introverts about children's book marketing. It's what gave Laura the idea for Marketing Mondays on her blog and started the whole Bubble Stampede in the first place.
